Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch painter whose tragic life and brilliant canvases have made him a legend. Unhappy in life, disappointed in love and religion, he turned to painting, hoping to find some emotional relief. His early works were dark and brooding using heavy linear brush strokes. But, under the influence of Impressionism, his work soon grew light and gayer, exciting with swirling, spontaneous brush strokes, heavy with thick paint and brilliant color. Sunflowers is one of his most famous paintings. During his lifetime few, if any, of his painting were ever sold. Today they are priceless.
